AND LOVE TAKES WING
by Ann Mortifee
And so it is that health returns
As wounding is released
And winter wakens into spring
As light returns
And love takes wing
To fill the nests and pools and thickets
The burrows and buds
Of every living thing.
Without the crucifixion
Resurrection cannot be
The seed must freeze
Before it cracks
The stone rolls back
The essence frees
To bud, to bloom
And then to fruit
The cycle to complete
And then to age, to wither back
Again to waste, to slumber, crack
The round eternal circling back
The shattering, splendid spiraled dance
Of chance and strict precision
And so it is that health returns
As wounding is released
And winter weakens into spring
As light returns
And love takes wing
