"It is useless for people to hear if they do not listen with their hearts. Rita Joe helps them to listen with their hearts and when hearts are open, ears can hear."
THE LATE CHIEF DAN GEORGE
In 1967, Ann wrote the music for George Ryga's seminal Canadian play The Ecstasy of Rita Joe. We are pleased to announce that The Ecstasy of Rita Joe is being remounted, May 7 - 11, 2003, in Winnipeg, as part of a retrospective honoring of Arnold Spohr, Artistic Director of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet.
Adapted from George Ryga's play, this seminal Canadian classic will be presented as a ballet about a young aboriginal woman who leaves her reserve in the hope of finding a better life in the city. With little schooling and poor English, she cannot support herself and becomes entrapped in a desolate world of prostitution and drug addiction.
