This drum is very old. It has had many names and been repainted a number of times. Many people have played it in ceremonies, healing circles and workshops. In this business, experience is a better guide.

I have had this Moroccan style "tar" from many years, and from time to time I added a snake, Only recently did I realize I was representing the seven energy centers, or chakras, of the body. Sometimes I must wait a long time for these paintings to unfold.

This child's spirit was stuck in this reality after death. In part, it was the love of her dogs that kept her here. The Spirit world often shows me who I've helped, after they have crossed over.

I once received a spontaneous reading from an acquaintance while sharing the sunshine on her deck. She turned to me and said " I see you surrounded by animals, row upon row in widening circles as far as I can see. A Buffalo comes to you and bows--he says "You can have everything." I understand this to mean the bounty of the animal spirits, and I honor the abundance of their presence in my art.

This skin came to me seemingly damaged beyond repair: the animal had apparently been drug away from its killing ground--the hair was rubbed off and the hide embedded with small pebbles. The skin was green with rot and covered with maggots. Yet I felt compelled to keep working with it: cleaning, trimming, scraping with utmost care. Before I stretched the skin over its hoop I rubbed bear droppings into its membrane for healing, and to ask forgiveness on behalf of my people for this lack of respect. What resulted is one of the finest drum voices I've ever had the joy to offer to spirit.

This drum did psychopomp work; its vibration helped direct souls into the 'bowl' of the drum and then out through the bullet hole. The image that appeared afterward for me to paint shows the story: the old woman with her drum and owl feather encircling a spirit as she guides it home.
