CRIPPLED RAVEN
I once make a small pipe by twisting a sliver of stone into a piece of green chert. I was so anxious to made a perfect fit between the stem and bowl that I pressured the stone and it chipped. I had to hold the two together whenever I used the pipe to send a prayer and this made me feel clumsy and inadequate. A crippled raven brought me a good lesson about being broken. A prayer is not more worthy because of the perfection of its form. The raven was not crippled when it flew.
EAGLE BEAT
The shamanic journey rhythm is called the "eagle beat" and the drum that carries the journey on its vibration is known as the 'good horse".
IN THE SWEAT LODGE
This drum shows some work coming for me. I need to bring Coyote back to life by helping Fox step over him. I understand that Bear will be in the lodge, and that Bear will be the lodge.
DANIEL
I think this is an actual person I know but have not met in this incarnation, although I do know a young man named Daniel who once lived with a Boa named Misty. He gave me an owl mask and taught me the importance of acknowledging my inner child. I think perhaps we know different versions of the same few people and meet them again and again.
HONOR DRUM
During the process of making this drum I had occasion to sit in a wilderness pool at the top of a waterfall. I asked for a beautiful stone to come and honor my new drum, and this humble pebble caught my eye. I later realized, as so often happens, that I'd gotten just what I asked for.
SWIMMING WITH SNAKES
I have had this Moroccan style "tar" from many years, and from time to time I added a snake, Only recently did I realize I was representing the seven energy centers, or chakras, of the body. Sometimes I must wait a long time for these paintings to unfold.
CHILD SPIRIT
This child's spirit was stuck in this reality after death. In part, it was the love of her dogs that kept her here. The Spirit world often shows me who I've helped, after they have crossed over.
This drum is very old. It has had many names and been repainted a number of times. Many people have played it in ceremonies, healing circles and workshops. In this business, experience is a better guide.
